The final of this year's ‘The Pianists' competition for outstanding amateurs has been won by Dominic Smith – a race car Aerodynamicist from Oxford . The competition took place at London 's Cadogan Hall on Saturday 17 November.

Run by Yamaha and Pianist magazine, the contest gives adult amateur pianists the chance to perform on a prestigious concert stage. All participants must be over 30.

There are two categories: classical and jazz. The classical winner gets to perform a movement from a concerto of their choice with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall in 2008, and the jazz winner will perform with Julian Joseph and his band at a top London jazz venue. The competition also offers an Audience Favourite Award.

The six finalists performed in front of judges Jamie Cullum, Julian Joseph, Jason Rebello and BBC New Generation Artist Gwilym Simcock, Piers Lane , Noriko Ogawa, Martin Roscoe and Barry Wordsworth.
