GOING FOR A SONG

The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters has launched a new songwriting competition for youngsters.

The Origin8 competition, in association with Youth Music, is open to solo artists and bands ages 14-18 and gives 50 finalists the chance to attend an all-day masterclass from UK grime star Kano . The masterclass will include tips on songwriting, production and the music business.

Entrants must create an original piece of music inspired by images in the Origin8 gallery – all taken from the National Gallery's collection.

Four winners, selected by the judging panel, will also get the chance to work in a professional studio with the help of a leading UK songwriter as well as prizes from techno giant Apple.

The closing date for entries is 15 December 2007.
