Around the World in 18 Ways

African drumming – an increasingly popular activity for community, group and schools-based learning, with growing numbers of resources available. A comprehensive online respurce is the African Music Webring – http://V.webring.com/hub?ring=africanmusic – which links 71 active sites. Another site, African Drum Beat –
www.african-drumbeat.co.uk – offers MP3s and video clips of African drumming, rhythm patterns etc.

Asian Music Circuit (AMC) – created in 1989 by the Arts Council and independent since 1991, AMC is the largest promoter of Asian music in the UK . It organises tours, education workshops and related events and will be opening a new resource centre in London some time next year, having been awarded lottery funds. www.amc.org.uk

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan – founded in 1938, the UK branch of BVB was the first independent overseas branch and the largest institute for Indian arts and culture outside India . Runs courses in vocal and instrumental music including karnatic flute, sitar, vina and violin. www.bhavan.ne

Drum Jam – claiming to be ‘the UK 's premier rhythmic events entertainment company', Drum Jam works in schools, communities, prisons and the corporate sector. It runs drumming workshops across the UK for all ages and ability groups.

Its use of the drum circle is a way to ‘promote, introduce and support strong value systems'. www.drumjam.co.uk

Gamelan – a generic term for assorted orchestras played in Indonesia , gamelan is the dominant element of Indonesian traditional music. Popular in the west for at least 50 years – inspiring composers such as Britten – instruments in the gamelan include bronze gongs, chimes and metallophones as well as drums, flutes and bowed string instruments. www.gamelan.org.uk has a list of UK gamelan resources, workshops and ensembles.

Horniman Museum – the Horniman has the third most important ethnographic collection in the UK, including one of the country's most comprehensive musical instrument collections (more than 7,000 objects) ranging from ancient Egyptian bone clappers to synthesizers. It also runs a range of educational workshops and hosts performances. www.horniman.ac.uk
