There are some real gems to be found. Here are three of the best that come highly recommended.

O-Generator
www.o-music.tv

This excellent resource allows primary- and secondary-aged pupils to get to grips with rhythms, chords and melodies. Based on a circle that rotates through 360 degrees in each bar it is an attractively visual tool to use. The full version also comes with a series of step-by-step lessons useful for the non-specialist teacher.

Band in a Box
www.pgmusic.com

Creating backing tracks is easy with this innovative software from PG Music. All you do is to input chords and choose a style: the computer will do the rest. It's helpful for practising ensemble music and excellent technical support is provided.

Sibelius 3
www.sibelius.co.uk

This ever-popular notation software isn't cheap but with eLearning Credits a site licence is within the reach of most schools. An excellent way to get pupils into composing at Key Stages 3 to 5 and useful for teachers too.
